Mpumalanga has beautiful scenic day drives,
and the
Panorama Route
is just one of them.
The circular route begins and ends in the town
of Sabie and goes via a myriad of waterfalls.
You’ll see the Mac Mac, Lisbon and Berlin falls
and stop off at God’s Window for a panoramic
view across the majestic mountainous
landscape. Bourke’s Luck Potholes are natural
rock formations that look other worldly and the
Blyde River Canyon is a dramatically beautiful
rockscape not to be missed.
Flyfishermen are in their element in
Mpumalanga with streams and dams of fish
on the escarpment and in the foothills. From
Dullstroom and Belfast all the way to Lydenburg
and Waterval Onder are
flyfishing
waters for all
levels of expertise. They’re best fished between
March and September, when waters are cool.
When in Lydenburg also stop in at the Museum
in town to see replicas of the bizarre sculpted
Lydenburg Heads found in the area and believed
to be from an ancient local tribe.

Cradle of Humankind
is widely
believed to be the birthplace of humans,
and this World Heritage Site is just
outside the vibrant metropolis of Johannesburg.
It’s where the fossilized cranium of an ape-
man (Australopithecus africanus) was found.
Nicknamed Mrs Ples, though it could arguably
also be Mr Ples, the skull is over two million
years old. Some caves can be visited and are
magnificently beautiful. Most notable is Wonder
Cave with stalagmites and stalactites that
resemble broccoli and the Madonna, and there’s
an underground lake to marvel at too.
Above ground level, a
Soweto
tour gives first
hand insight into life in South Africa’s biggest
township. On the tour you’ll visit Vilakazi Street,
