doing a unique underwater scuba trail, or hiking
the iconic Otter Trail. But a swim in the ocean
here at the tiny secluded beach and lunch at the
restaurant in the park overlooking the Indian
Ocean also makes for an enjoyable day trip.
If you choose to head east of Port Elizabeth and
into the Karoo, near Graaff-Reinet is the rugged
Valley of Desolation
to experience time for quiet
contemplation. The rugged little village of Nieu
Bethesda is nearby and is a haven for artists, poets
and playwrights, with an assortment of unique
restaurants to enjoy. The most famous attraction
in the village, though, is the famous
Owl House
,
created by artist of old Helen Martins. The area
around the house is a concrete garden of magi and
mythical creatures, while the house inside glitters
with crushed glass and fantastical creations.
FREE STATE
illions of years ago the Free State was at
different times a dunefield, a marshland
and a volcanic landscape. These eras
can all be clearly seen in the bands of different
coloured sandstone of the area. Golden Gate is
a great example and the different bands of stone
hold fossils from ferns, fish and dinosaurs. You
can see fossilised dinosaur eggs at
Golden Gate
too, go hiking amidst the plains game and visit the
unusual Cathedral Cave to see a breeding colony
of bald ibis.
Close to Golden Gate is a
Basotho Cultural
Village
, which is both interesting and intriguing.
Here you can see Basotho traditional architecture
and buy Basotho crafts and art – you can also
have the bones read by the resident Sangoma, if
he is around. It’s a fascinating glimpse into this
colourful culture of the area.
The popular village of
Clarens
is surrounded by
sandstone mountains and is also close to Golden
Gate. It has one-of-a-kind restaurants and little
shops to browse for keepsakes. Local sandstone
fashioned into different shapes, including
candlesticks and garden accessories, is a favourite
buy. The World Heritage Site of
