The natural wonder of the Copper Canyon is a
must-see. A series of canyons rather than one, it is
larger than the USA’s Grand Canyon. The Chihua-
hua al Pacifico railway track passes through the
canyon via 86 tunnels and 37 bridges. It’s quite an
experience and the views are spectacular.
Tourists interested in culture will love the Dias
des los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival, and
Oaxaca is the best city to celebrate this holiday,
which starts at the end of October when tombs are
prepared for the return of the spirits.
Beach lovers are spoilt for choice in Mexico, with
450 beaches on both the Atlantic (Caribbean)
and Pacific oceans (and the Sea of Cortes), fea-
turing everything from surfing, sailing and other
watersports – or just lounging on the silky sands.
Acapulco on the Pacific coast is the quintessen-
tial Mexican resort town, made famous by 1950s
movie stars. It’s also known for its impressive
cliff divers. Divers will love the coral reefs of
Cozumel, today a national park, which Jacques
Cousteau rated as one of the best diving areas in
the world, while Los Cabos is the place to go for
superb sport fishing.
You will truly be spoilt for choice in Mexico – it is
so, so much more than mariachi, sombreros and
tequila.
